Subject: Quoth the Maven: "bid no more"

For Andy's sake, a preamble: you're all invited to bridge at the Pink
Palace on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.

If you let me know where you're coming from, I can provide detailed
directions. In case you get lost on the way, call us at 650 xxx xxxx. No
need to RSVP - just show up anytime after 8:30 and bang on the door.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming. Here's possibly the first
installment of a Pink Palace poem. Given time, inspiration, and a sense of
meter (sorely lacking), I may add more. (Suggestions welcome!)

The Maven

Once upon a Thursday dreary, while I offered, weak and weary,
Many a quaint and curious contract for my partner to explore,
While I bid two, nearly jumping, suddenly there came a thumping,
As of some one rudely bumping, bumping at the Palace door,
"'Tis some visitor", I muttered, "thumping on the Palace door --
Probably Jane, and nothing more."

Ah, how sharp the sting I still feel from the consequence of my zeal
And how I wish I could repeal the bid I bid the week before.
Eagerly I asked for aces; of sanity I had no traces.
My partner showed me dirty faces - faces that tried to implore
For returning to my reason and for stopping then at four --
Clearly we should've bid no more.

Then a soothing eighties station broke my silent contemplation
And filled the Palace with some flawless songs from eighty-four.
As a ploy to stay the setting of my hand I stood repeating,
"It's some late slacker entreating entrance at the Palace door.
Maybe Ben or maybe Lisa beating on the Palace door; --
Just those two, and no one more."

Presently the noise grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
"Hey!" I started, "you out there, stop the banging and uproar.
At the moment we are bidding, and there's six of us here sitting
So if you're done with hitting, hitting our poor pink Palace door,
Come join us and make it seven" - here I opened wide the door; ---
Darkness there and nothing more.
